FAIRFIELD, NJ — Over the past several years, Schuman Cheese has strategically filled gaps in its import portfolio, said Quentin Wright-McDuffie, brand manager, Bella Rosa and import business for Schuman.

“Our journey has transformed significantly,” Wright-McDuffie said. “Since taking the helm, we have broadened our horizons beyond our initial focus on Italian and Italian-style cheeses worldwide.”

The 2014 addition of Dodoni to the Schuman family of import cheeses was pivotal, Wright-McDuffie said.

“Its instant success revealed a strong appetite among US consumers for premium imported cheeses and a curiosity to explore diverse cultures and their unique culinary nuances,” he said.

And Schuman didn’t stop there. After bringing Dodoni into the fold, the company expanded its network further, partnering with exceptional producers to enrich its portfolio.

Schuman introduced Spanish, Swiss, Dutch, and Belgian cheeses, among others, and its customers were thrilled with the new additions, Wright-McDuffie said.

“They appreciated the effort we put into educating and promoting our partners’ products, enhancing their understanding and enjoyment of these fine cheeses,” he said.

Schuman reports continued strong demand for its authentic PDO Feta and Halloumi from Dodoni.

Among the other stars of the company’s import program, Wright-McDuffie said, is Brugge Comtesse.

For centuries, the city of Bruges, Belgium, has been known for its refined culture and exceptional craftsmanship. Today, inspired by its rich culinary heritage, Brugge Cheese offers “an unforgettable gustatory experience,” with delicate aromas and unique flavors.

One of those cheeses, Brugge Comtesse Vintage, is aged for a minimum of 12 months and includes hints of roasted hazelnut and summer fruit. Another variety in the line, Brugge Comtesse Original, is aged for a minimum of six months, boasts hints of apricot and vanilla, and has a creamy feel perfect for sauces and other applications, Wright-McDuffie said.

Another staple of the Schuman import program, Old Amsterdam, features four aged goudas in classic, mild and reserve varieties, as well as a goat cheese. The Old Amsterdam Reserve, described as crunchy and special, is extra aged for at least 18 months.
