SAN DIEGO – Wellness and fitness supplement maker Unico Nutrition collaborated with animal-free whey protein producer Perfect Day, Inc., to reformulate its Apollo protein powder.

Unico’s revamped formula for the product now includes both traditional dairy – grass-fed, animal-based protein – and whey made through precision fermentation.

“We chose to include Perfect Day’s ingredient in our flagship protein line because we believe that we have a responsibility to our customers and to our planet to be as ecologically efficient as we can,” said Lance Herrington, Unico’s founder and chief executive officer. “Our goal is to consume the least amount of resources as possible in the production of our product, while still retaining its quality.”

Per Perfect Day, its precision fermentation process reduces water consumption up to 99%, greenhouse gas emissions up to 97% and energy use up to 60% compared to traditional production methods.

The new hybrid protein powder from Unico, called Apollo II, also includes egg white, and its creators said the new version of the product was formulated to build lean muscle more effectively than whey alone. Per Unico, the product is optimized for diet and weight loss, with cross-flow filtration removing “all excess fats, sugars, and carbohydrates to keep you full for 6-8 hours while added protease enzymes aid in digestion to eliminate bloating and discomfort.”
